ABSTRACT

The exposome, which represents the total environmental exposures individuals face throughout their lifetime, has profound implications for human health, including immune system function. While the effect of the exposome on health has been widely explored, there is a lack of research on applying advanced machine learning techniques, particularly explainable AI (XAI) methods like LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) and SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations), to study its impact on the immune system. This study seeks to bridge this gap by utilizing LIME and SHAP to enhance the interpretability of machine learning models in exposome-related health research. LIME simplifies complex models to approximate individual predictions, helping to understand the local behavior of the model, while SHAP provides a unified approach to feature importance, explaining how each feature contributes to a specific prediction. These methods have been widely applied in health research, particularly for interpreting complex, high-dimensional data such as genomics, clinical data, and environmental exposures. By leveraging LIME and SHAP, this research aims to explore and interpret the intricate relationships between environmental factors and immune system responses. Ultimately, the study will offer deeper insights into how environmental exposures influence immune health using LIME and SHAP methods.
